In the winter of 2024/2025, the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) in Lapland are expected to be exceptionally spectacular. This is due to the solar activity cycle. The sun goes through an 11-year cycle and in 2024 there is a peak in this cycle. This peak is called the Solar Maximum.
“Though solar maximum is often referred to in terms of the month where the sunspot number peaks, the associated period of high activity lasts longer than that — from one year to over two years. So, in the current solar maximum, we expect high levels of solar activity throughout 2024 and likely into 2025.”
During this period, the Sun’s magnetic activity is at its highest, leading to a dramatic increase in the number of solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). These solar events release high-energy particles that, when they collide with Earth’s atmosphere, produce the vibrant and dynamic displays of the Northern Lights. As a result, the Northern Lights are not only more frequent during this period, but are also brighter and more intense than during quieter solar periods.
